Unlike many Mediterranean islands, Lastovo is densely forested. Pine trees, maquis and old agricultural terraces shape much of the landscape, while dry-stone walls and footpaths reveal traces of former agricultural life.
Protected as a nature park, the island has largely escaped intensive development. Forests reach the coastline, settlements remain small and nature continues to define much of the experience of the island.
